Dr. Sunil Kakarla

DVM, Ph.D., Owner

Dr. Sunil Kakarla, an experienced and compassionate veterinarian in Cary, NC, grew up in India. After graduating from the College of Veterinary Medicine in India, he practiced as a companion animal veterinarian for five years in a metropolitan city in India. He moved to the United States in 2005 with a passion for practicing high-quality veterinary medicine in an advanced setting. During that process, he pursued his MS and Ph.D. in a renowned lab at Marshall University in West Virginia.

As a graduate student, Dr. Kakarla performed cutting-edge research and had several high impact publications to his credit. While pursuing graduate studies, he simultaneously completed the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE) in 2010. Soon after this accomplishment, he began volunteering at several local animal hospitals. He completed his clinical experience program and obtained his license to practice in the US the same year.

In 2011, after graduating with a doctoral degree, he joined a small animal practice in Durham/RTP where he established a huge clientele and treated about 6000 to 7000 pets per year.

With his continued passion to provide the best quality veterinary care, he joined the state-of-the-art Walnut Street Animal Hospital in June 2016. As a veterinarian in the RTP area of NC, he strongly believes in quality care for pets and in being available to his patients when needed.

Sunil Kakarla is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and has special interests in dermatology and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, as well as emergency medicine. Dr. Kakarla is married and has a son and a daughter. He enjoys spending quality time with his family, including his 1-year-old Golden-Doodle, Brownie, and a 4-year-old Poodle, Milky. He enjoys serving his community by actively helping rescue groups and shelter pets, and in his free time, he plays volleyball.

Madhukar Kolli

DVM, Ms, Ph.D, Chief Veterinarian

Motivated from an early age living up in the farmland by my love of animals and a passion for science, I always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. I graduated from The College of Veterinary Science, Tirupati, India in 2004 with first class.

As a new graduate, I worked in India in a small and large animal practice for two years. With a passion for advancement in my career, I then moved to the United States of America and pursued my Masters and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. I relished the experience of living and working in a different country. After completing my higher education, I worked in a busy small animal practice in Fayetteville, NC, for six years and helped pets and pet owners with preventive care, dental prophylaxis procedures, dental extractions, and soft-tissue surgeries.

My passion to work in a small individual practice became a reality during this time. I made the move to Charlotte in June 2018 to take on the veterinarian role at Best Care Animal Hospital in Matthews. I live in Matthews with my wife, two kids, and a dog - Candy. In my spare time, I like to travel and play volleyball. My next adventure is publishing a research project on breed associated changes with age!

I try to offer the best care to my clients and their pets and have a special interest in surgery, emergency care, and internal medicine. I look forward to meeting all our Best Care Animal Hospital clients and their furry friends!

Regional Finance Manager

Nicole Ronquillo

Pet Groomer

I am originally from a small town in Ohio. I am 23 years old. I have always had a love for animals and have a blue American Staffordshire Terrier at home. I started my career with animals about 2 years ago when I started working for PetSmart as a bather in their grooming salon. I learned so much about working with domestic animals while being employed there and it just made me want to learn more. Until I started working in a grooming salon, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and I’m so thankful I had this opportunity to not only continue my career with animals but continue to learn so much about them.

Dalton Furr

Veterinary Assistant

I was born and raised in Charlotte NC, my family owns a farm with nine horses, as well as a plethora of other animals, ranging from cats to dogs, even cows at one point. All of which I cared for deeply. From a young age I have always been passionate about all the facets of animal care. I have always dreamed of a career in which I could help animals in need. After getting my foot in the door working at a local doggy daycare, I gained proper and extensive experience interacting with animals, including feeding and administering medicine. Over the next four years I worked my way up the ladder of dog daycare and boarding/ training kennels. Soon feeling that my skills and training were being underutilized I began my work at Best Care Animal Hospital, as a Veterinary Assistant, where I hope to further my education and career in the field of animal care.

Alexandra Wright

Veterinary Assistant

Hello, my name is Alex and I was born in Colombia, SC, but have lived in Charlotte for about 12 years now. At home, I am a mom to three dogs (Guinness, Yukon, Diesel) and a cat (Bleu), all of which get my undivided love and attention when I’m not at work.

I have always dreamed about working with animals and I am currently half way there, working to become a Wildlife Biologist while simultaneously working here at Best Care Animal Hospital. By being here, I have learned a plethora of new things and continue to by being exposed to new situations and new clients every day.

Anna Rogers

Veterinary Assistant

Hi! I’m Anna. I am a pre-veterinary student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I am majoring in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Marine Science. My lifelong goal is to attend NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine and eventually work as a small animal veterinarian. I grew up near Washington, DC and have owned dogs my whole life. I have been working as a technician since May 2019 and have previous experience in canine behaviorism, where I trained medical alert service dogs. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my Goldendoodle, Hamilton (who is close to earning his trick dog title!), and going on hikes with my friends.

Taelyn Torres

Veterinary Assistant

I was originally born in Huntington, West virginia and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. For the most part of my life I believed that I wanted to follow in my mother's foosteps becoming a nurse. I went most of my tennage years not knowing what I wanted to be when I grew up until I came acrost a show called Animal Cops Houston. What stood out most to me in the show were the veteranarians. If ther is one thing I inherited from my mother is was the passion to help heal and improve the quality of life for others but in my case it is for animals.

Because I went most of my high school years not knowing exactly what I wanted to do, I did not take school seriously enough to make the grades I needed to get into a 4 year college and work on becoming a veteranarian. Instead I came up with a plan to attend a community college majoring as a vet technican and after a few years doing that, I want to go back to school and work on being a veteranarian. I am currently enrolled in penn foster to finish up my degree. The reason I love animals so much is because they never judge us for who we are, as long as we give them the care and love they deserve they give us so much more in return. I find it so interesting how we have the ability to communicate with them despite them being a completley different species and threw training they have the ability to understand us.

Kendall Watrous

Veterinary Assistant

My name is Kendall Watrous, I was born and raised in NY, I have lived here in Charlotte NC since 2014 and I am currently in nursing school obtaining my bachelor's degree with a minor in psychology. I am an East Carolina Alumni as well as a Gamma Chi Epsilon Alumni. My sorority, Gamma Chi Epsilon has a Philanthropy that works closely with the American Cancer Society to raise money and awareness towards all different types of cancer as well as provide inclusive service events to the public and other college aged students. Not only was I able to work closely with animals via specific service opportunities, but my first job was working at a pet store here in Charlotte and ever since then I have been working hands on with animals. I have two English bulldogs and a mixed breed dog named Niko. However if I could I would live on a farm with 1000 animals. I enjoy working in a hospital setting especially those who deal with animals because we are able to provide care and comfort to all furry friends and fortunately I am going into the human medical field so I am extremely thankful for this experience. One thing I really enjoy about this job and this hospital is that we work with a multitude of animal rescues and that warms my heart to know we can provide care and love that they neglected to receive before.

Leonela Flores

Veterinary Assistant

Hey! I’m Nela, and I’m from the beautiful city of Miami, FL, where I was raised in a bilingual household. Growing up, I always had a pet at home, ranging from dogs, cats, iguanas, turtles, hamsters, and chinchillas. No matter what, I always kept myself surrounded by animals. I knew that regardless of what I did in life, I was destined to work with animals.

I currently have the opportunity of being a Veterinary Assistant here at Best Care Animal Hospital, and it’s one of the greatest decisions I’ve made thus far. I love coming into work and knowing that I’m making a difference by helping everyone’s furry family members improve their health. My dream is to one day have a non-profit, no-kill shelter in the city of Miami where I will host community events to unify our neighborhoods by spreading peace, love, and happiness. In my free time, I love to spend time with my girlfriend and two children, King (Black Mouth Cur) and Mia (Shiba Inu). We enjoy going on adventures, caring after our 15 plants, cooking, eating (I’m a huge foodie), painting, drawing, creating, listening to music, and dancing!

Lindsay Nelson

Practice Manager

Hello! My Name is Lindsay! I have been with Best Care Animal Hospital since October of 2018 when we opened. I am the lead veterinary technician and I took over management of the practice in the fall of 2019. I have been a technician for the last 10 years and have spent time in General Practice, emergency medicine, and high volume spay/neuter clinics at various shelters.

I am the proud mother of one human child, two pitbulls, and a norweigan forest cat. Although it’s hard to pull me away from anything animal related, any free time I may get is usually spent hiking through various forests and mountains throughout North carolina. Veterinary Medicine is my passion and I plan to be in this field and with BCAH for a long time!

Maria

Client Service Representative (receptionist)

Hello! My name is Maria, and I was born in Lima, Peru. My family relocated to South Florida when I was a child, and I was raised with a fascination for Florida’s diverse wildlife species. I spent a large portion of my time educating myself about all the native birds, insects, and reptiles that I encountered daily. On many occasions, I found myself gravitating toward exploring nature reserves and animal conservation centers. My love for animals grew stronger when I adopted a rabbit, and I was truly able to understand the responsibility that comes with nurturing animals. Since then, I have made it my goal to provide safe environments and educated care to the animals that surround me.

I recently moved to North Carolina to broaden my career opportunities in the animal care field, and I was fortunate enough to discover Best Care Animal Hospital. I currently work here as a client service coordinator, and I’m bilingual and happy to help spanish speaking clients. On my time off, I come home to my two precious cats that I cherish with my whole heart. They have brought me so much happiness, peace, and comfort; all I wish is to provide the exact same to every animal in return.

Breanna Merlos

Client Service Representative (receptionist)

Hello, my name is Breanna Merlos. I was born and raised in Queens, NY. Growing up, I always had a passion for taking care of animals. For a little over 3 years, I’ve volunteered at an animal shelter while working my full-time job and studying at home. With this great opportunity of working with animals, I found my interest in one day becoming a Licensed Veterinary Technician.

My position as a CSR/Veterinary Assistant at Best Care Animal Hospital has taught me a lot about veterinary terminology, symptoms, and health conditions. Best Care Animal Hospital has given me the proper skills to appropriately handle any animal that comes in, whether they’re fearful, aggressive, or injured. On top of this, I’ve also grown as a person and gained the appropriate knowledge to pursue a career with the ASPCA.

Aside from working on my veterinary career goals, I spend time at home with my boyfriend and our children, Toby (Mixed Canine) and Shadow (German Shepherd/Husky Mix). We all love to be goofy and watch movies. We enjoy being cuddled up and drinking hot chocolate, as well as baking goodies, cooking, and working out.
