Our Team

Dr. Sunil Kakarla

DVM, Ph.D., Owner

Dr. Sunil Kakarla, an experienced and compassionate veterinarian in Cary, NC, grew up in India. After graduating from the College of Veterinary Medicine in India, he practiced as a companion animal veterinarian for five years in a metropolitan city in India. He moved to the United States in 2005 with a passion for practicing high-quality veterinary medicine in an advanced setting. During that process, he pursued his MS and Ph.D. in a renowned lab at Marshall University in West Virginia.

As a graduate student, Dr. Kakarla performed cutting-edge research and had several high impact publications to his credit. While pursuing graduate studies, he simultaneously completed the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE) in 2010. Soon after this accomplishment, he began volunteering at several local animal hospitals. He completed his clinical experience program and obtained his license to practice in the US the same year.

In 2011, after graduating with a doctoral degree, he joined a small animal practice in Durham/RTP where he established a huge clientele and treated about 6000 to 7000 pets per year.

With his continued passion to provide the best quality veterinary care, he joined the state-of-the-art Walnut Street Animal Hospital in June 2016. As a veterinarian in the RTP area of NC, he strongly believes in quality care for pets and in being available to his patients when needed.

Sunil Kakarla is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and has special interests in dermatology and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, as well as emergency medicine. Dr. Kakarla is married and has a son and a daughter. He enjoys spending quality time with his family, including his 1-year-old Golden-Doodle, Brownie, and a 4-year-old Poodle, Milky. He enjoys serving his community by actively helping rescue groups and shelter pets, and in his free time, he plays volleyball.

Madhukar Kolli

DVM, Ms, Ph.D, Chief Veterinarian

Motivated from an early age living up in the farmland by my love of animals and a passion for science, I always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. I graduated from The College of Veterinary Science, Tirupati, India in 2004 with first class.

As a new graduate, I worked in India in a small and large animal practice for two years. With a passion for advancement in my career, I then moved to the United States of America and pursued my Masters and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. I relished the experience of living and working in a different country. After completing my higher education, I worked in a busy small animal practice in Fayetteville, NC, for six years and helped pets and pet owners with preventive care, dental prophylaxis procedures, dental extractions, and soft-tissue surgeries.

My passion to work in a small individual practice became a reality during this time. I made the move to Charlotte in June 2018 to take on the veterinarian role at Best Care Animal Hospital in Matthews. I live in Matthews with my wife, two kids, and a dog - Candy. In my spare time, I like to travel and play volleyball. My next adventure is publishing a research project on breed associated changes with age!

I try to offer the best care to my clients and their pets and have a special interest in surgery, emergency care, and internal medicine. I look forward to meeting all our Best Care Animal Hospital clients and their furry friends!

Alyssa Haller

Regional Manager

Hi there! My name is Alyssa Haller, and I am currently the Regional Manager for Walnut Street Animal Hospital, Capital Blvd Animal Hospital, and Best Care Animal Hospital. I have been working with this company since 2017 and started out as a volunteer, then slowly worked my way up to become the Regional Manager. I have always had a passion for medicine and was raised with animals, so I figured becoming a veterinarian was the route for me. As I worked with this company over the past few years, I have taken more of a liking to the management side of the veterinary field. I very much love where I work, the team I am lucky to work with, and the community we strive to provide care for.

I am also in school to further my education in the management field, so if I am not in the office I am most likely working on school assignments. I also enjoy painting and spending time with family, friends, and my new fur baby, Jax who, I adopted through one of Capital’s Spay/Neuter clinics.

Katherine Miller

Veterinary Assistant

I was born in a small town near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I am 22 years old and have two large-breed dogs whom I love more than anything in the world. Growing up, I always told my mother that I wanted to save all the animals in the world someday, and I knew that I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was three years old.

When I was 19, I began working as a kennel attendant at a local doggy daycare. I learned more about dogs during the year I worked there than I had in my entire life. I came home covered in fur daily and absolutely loved it. Though I was happy playing with my favorite dogs every day, I kept my eyes open for training opportunities that would help me pursue my dream. That opportunity came when Best Care Animal Hospital opened near where I lived and worked.

I started at Best Care Animal Hospital as a kennel technician and veterinary assistant but have since worked my way up to becoming a highly trained veterinary technician. I have been a part of the Best Care Animal Hospital team for over a year now and have grown both as a vet tech and a person. The road is a long one that has taken dedication, hard work, and late nights, but I have continued to push myself to make the world a better place for animals. I invite you and your furry babies to come join our family and be a part of my journey. We love serving our community and its pets!

Dalton Furr

Veterinary Assistant

I was born and raised in Charlotte NC, my family owns a farm with nine horses, as well as a plethora of other animals, ranging from cats to dogs, even cows at one point. All of which I cared for deeply. From a young age I have always been passionate about all the facets of animal care. I have always dreamed of a career in which I could help animals in need. After getting my foot in the door working at a local doggy daycare, I gained proper and extensive experience interacting with animals, including feeding and administering medicine. Over the next four years I worked my way up the ladder of dog daycare and boarding/ training kennels. Soon feeling that my skills and training were being underutilized I began my work at Best Care Animal Hospital, as a Veterinary Assistant, where I hope to further my education and career in the field of animal care.

Alexandra Wright

Veterinary Assistant

Hello, my name is Alex and I was born in Colombia, SC, but have lived in Charlotte for about 12 years now. At home, I am a mom to three dogs (Guinness, Yukon, Diesel) and a cat (Bleu), all of which get my undivided love and attention when I’m not at work.

I have always dreamed about working with animals and I am currently half way there, working to become a Wildlife Biologist while simultaneously working here at Best Care Animal Hospital. By being here, I have learned a plethora of new things and continue to by being exposed to new situations and new clients every day.

Lindsay Nelson

Practice Manager

Hello! My Name is Lindsay! I have been with Best Care Animal Hospital since October of 2018 when we opened. I am the lead veterinary technician and I took over management of the practice in the fall of 2019. I have been a technician for the last 10 years and have spent time in General Practice, emergency medicine, and high volume spay/neuter clinics at various shelters.

I am the proud mother of one human child, two pitbulls, and a norweigan forest cat. Although it’s hard to pull me away from anything animal related, any free time I may get is usually spent hiking through various forests and mountains throughout North carolina. Veterinary Medicine is my passion and I plan to be in this field and with BCAH for a long time!

Anna Rogers

Veterinary Assistant

Hi! I’m Anna. I am a pre-veterinary student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I am majoring in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Marine Science. My lifelong goal is to attend NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine and eventually work as a small animal veterinarian. I grew up near Washington, DC and have owned dogs my whole life. I have been working as a technician since May 2019 and have previous experience in canine behaviorism, where I trained medical alert service dogs. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my Goldendoodle, Hamilton (who is close to earning his trick dog title!), and going on hikes with my friends.
